FAQ’s
Here are some frequently asked questions that we hope will help you.
What are the financial benefits of solar energy?
When you install a solar energy system on your property, you save money on your electricity bills and protect yourself against rising electricity rates in the future. How much you can save depends on the utility rates and solar policies in your area, but going solar is a smart investment regardless of where you live.
Are LED lights better than incandescent?
LED lights are more expensive to purchase than incandescent lights, but they’re more efficient (they’ll last 50,000 hours instead of 1,200 hours). They also have a lower annual operating cost, which is great for people trying to “go green.”
My Water Bill Went up, How Do I Check for Leaks?
The main causes of high water bills are running toilets, which can waste up to 200 litres per day, and leaky faucets, which can drip up to 20 litres per day. Check for leaks by inspecting faucets, as well as removing your toilet bowl’s tank and listening for any sounds, like hissing. If you don’t find leaks in either of those locations, you’ll need to check your water line and hose bibs. You may also want to contact us.
Do I need to replace my roof before installing solar?
Solar energy systems can last for 10 to 15 years, and it can be costly to remove and reinstall them if you need to replace your roof. Please get in touch with us to do an inspection prior to installation to avoid any disspointment.
What’s the benefit of whole-house surge protection?
When you protect your whole house from power surges, you’ll protect all of the equipment in it instead of just one piece that’s plugged into a surge protector. This can come in especially handy if you use a lot of electronics or appliances.

WHAT IS WRONG IF MY PIPES RATTLE IF I OPEN/CLOSE THE HOT WATER TAP?
There could be various causes. If it happens when you turn the tap on, there could be a loose bracket causing the pipes to rattle against their moorings as the water flows through.
A water hammer is a loud banging noise, which usually happens when you turn off the water. This is a water pressure issue. Close the mains water supply, and open all the taps in your home to drain all the water in the pipes. When no more water comes out, close all the taps and reopen the mains valve. This will replace the air and should stop the banging.
How long will my solar power system last?
In general, solar panels are very durable and capable of withstanding snow, wind, and hail. The various components of your solar power system will need to be replaced at different times, but your system should continue to generate electricity for 25 to 35 years.
What’s the difference between a blown fuse and a blown circuit breaker?
When the electrical current that passes through a fuse exceeds the limit, it burns a hole in the thin strip of metal. This stops the flow of current and it means you have a blown a fuse. Fuses need to be replaced (not reset).
When the electrical current exceeds the limit through a circuit breaker, however, the breaker trip setting opens to stop the flow of current. Breakers are re-settable by flipping the handle on the face of the breaker.
HOW DO I PROLONG THE LIFE OF MY GEYSER?
Regular servicing will increase the longevity of your geyser. It should be serviced every three to four years in areas where the water quality is good, and every two years if you have poor quality or hard water. A service involves draining the geyser, checking the magnesium sacrificial anode element and thermostat, and replacing the element and anode if necessary. Lime scale and sludge will be removed from the tank and the entire installation checked for any leaks.
