A certificate of compliance is one of those things that nobody really feels like doing, it’s always on the To Do List and it’s probably going to be there for a long time!
We’re here to say GET IT DONE!
And here’s why a certificate of compliance is so important:
You need to know that your electrical systems and components are fully compliant, safe and installed properly. Whether it’s because you’ve recently had some work done and you want to make sure that the work is done up to scratch, or because you want to check the current safety of your components and that there’s not been any serious wear and tear that requires repairs, you need to get your certificate of compliance done.
A certificate of compliance needs to be carried out by a registered electrician to check that everything is in compliance with the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1993. As a Homeowner you need a certificate of compliance as proof that you property is electrically sound, and your Insurance Company will also require this proof in order to insure your home and household contents. Sounds like an excellent reason to make sure you get your CoC done EVERY year!
A lot of Homeowners think that they only need to have a certificate of compliance completed if they are planning to sell. This is not true. A CoC should be carried out every 2 years in order to always remain compliant and in case you need to submit an insurance claim. Once you get your CoC it needs to be kept on the relevant property. Remember that!
Also remember that having a CoC doesn’t mean that you are free to have work done afterwards without updating the CoC, you need to have a new CoC completed after every new or upgraded electrical installation.
